String Orchestra

String Orchestra

CCA Vision: To be a String Orchestra of world-class standards and a CCA in which passion for music is nurtured.

CCA Mission: To display excellence in performing standards, develop leaders with character and resilience, and bring honour to the College.

Pre-requisite to join CCA: Ability to play a string instrument

Focused on helping students improve their skills and increase their appreciation of music, the NJC String Orchestra’s (NJCSO) customised programme – Enrich, Enhance, Engage combines appreciation of world-class performances, participation in masterclasses by renowned musicians, and performance opportunities such as our annual concert “Muse-ique” at the Esplanade Recital Studio.

Our CCA not only allows us to develop our musical ability, it also provides us with the opportunity to travel overseas for global exposure and to perform on the international stage. In 2014, we performed in the 8th Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna, Austria, and competed against youth orchestras from all over the world. We are honoured that we were the only ensemble from Asia to be awarded the accolade of Outstanding Success, coming in fourth in the String Orchestra category. We also achieved a Certificate of Distinction at the 2013 and 2015 Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation. Our 2016 season includes a trip to Hong Kong in June for exchange and exposure.

The NJCSO also boasts an extensive Character and Leadership Development programme which provides all members with opportunities to develop their leadership abilities by pairing potential leaders with student leader mentors. Taking initiative, and having resilience, compassion and empathy are emphasised through personal mentoring by the teachers-in-charge, and NJCSO student leaders are recognised for their vision and strength of character.
