Message from our Principal
Mrs Lucy Toh
In this 55th year of NJC’s founding, I am reflecting on the privilege of belonging to this community of NJCian staff and students – past and present – who are so passionate about life and learning.
The spirit of daring-do came across again and again in conversations with members of the Class of 1969 and others who studied here in the 70s. When they felt like having a bit more time in school to study and bond, a group of boys stayed over and slept in their classroom for the whole term! With the principal’s knowledge and approval of course. CCAs had to be invented from scratch. Students taught each other how to dance, sing, play a sport they’d never learned on the day of the competition itself. For me their spirit captures something of NJ Life that is very special – I still see students today trying new things they’ve never done before. May we all, students, staff and parents have the courage to brave discomfort and embarrassment in our thirst for learning and for life!
From cohorts in the 80s, 90s and 2000s, I learned the power of passionate teaching as many of us reflected on the impact of the late Mr. Don Whitby (NJC staff from 1979 to 2012). Mr. Whitby epitomised the fervent love of his subject that is characteristic of so many generations of NJC teachers. Colleagues who knew him were in tears when they learned of his passing – so many of us became Literature teachers because of him. But strikingly it was the alumni from the science classes whose memories of Mr. Whitby were particularly poignant. They knew him as the person who brought them into the world of theatre through ELDDS or coached them to succeed in the dreaded GP subject. Mr. Whitby’s greatest joy was to encourage young people. Captains of industry and leaders in public service, many of them, honour him for where they are today. NJ Honour is the ‘name’ I give to this culture of honouring our disciplines and encouraging learning which characterises the teacher-student relationship in NJC.
Working alongside our NJCians and teachers over the years have been the many alumni who give their time to return to mentor and inspire. To live out our mission to be the College of the Nation, we will need to address our hearts and minds to the problems that beset our nation and world today. Alumni are key to this. To illustrate, despite their very busy schedule, alumni like Prof Lim Chwee Teck (NJC’82) opened up his lab and came back to share with NJCians the world of engineering and entrepreneurship, and veteran educator and passionate mathematician, Dr Hang Kim Hoo (NJC’77) brought our faculty through the traits called for in 21st century inventive and adaptive thinking. NJ Research is the term I use to capture this spirit of inquiry, problem-solving and constant curiosity embodied by alumni like these which we are growing in today’s NJCians.
And from today’s NJCians, my own students, I am humbled constantly by your attentiveness and purposefulness in what you do. I’ve seen this when you study together and help your friends in their learning. In your VIAs and as you work with your classmates to bring our biannual Funtasia Carnival to life, I am struck by your heart for our friends with special needs whom your efforts will benefit. I am so impressed with how you organise activities to bring joy and new experiences to your peers – from the rich and memorable Orientations you plan to events like Get Boulder, Talenttime and Friendship Day. NJ Service truly is a way of life here at Hillcrest!
Fellow NJCians, I hope that these snapshots of our community will add on to your own memories of our 55th year and be an encouragement to you as they have been to me.
Growing People, Cultivating the Future
In his speech at the Institute of Policy Studies Singapore Perspectives 2023, Minister Chan Chun Sing touched upon the Chinese saying “十年树木,百年树人”, which translates to “10 years to grow a tree, a lifetime to grow a person”. It signifies the importance of developing young people in our schools so that they have the confidence and skills to keep on growing throughout their lives. At NJC, we do this through our curriculum but, even more so, through our community which comprises students, their parents, staff and alumni.
This year, we celebrate both College Day and Funtasia, our College carnival, on the same day. In tandem with Funtasia’s garden theme, we embrace this notion of “Growing People, Cultivating the Future'' by reflecting on how our college community must be a garden where our students’ curiosity is nurtured and their skills are honed.
In the soil of NJC’s deep relationships and rich learning experiences, we want our students and alumni to keep on growing in the courage and commitment to cultivate the future of our nation.
Cultivating the bright minds of our future
College Day Awards
Student of the Year
The National Junior College Student of the Year is the pinnacle of all student awards, recognising all-round excellence in academia, CCA, leadership and service.
Han Yijia
Receiving the Student of the Year Award is a great honour and I am immensely thankful for everyone that has supported me along the way.
Throughout my time in NJC, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to meet and learn from selfless and caring individuals from various backgrounds. This incredible community of people has allowed me to develop a profound appreciation for the value of service. I’ve come to understand that service extends far beyond grand gestures or assuming prominent leadership roles in the community. Instead, it encompasses every genuine action taken to give back to those around us. From the simplest of things such as saying a word of encouragement to a peer at the library, helping to take notes for a classmate, or taking the initiative to keep equipment after Physical Education lessons, these all exemplify what it means to serve with honour.
To me, this award is more than just a recognition of my individual contributions. Rather, it is a testament to the efforts of everyone that has helped me grow into the person I am today. Moving forward, let us continue engaging meaningfully with those around us and approach our society with empathy, kindness and respect.
The Lim Kim Woon Award
The Lim Kim Woon Award, initiated and structured by a former NJCian in honour of our first Principal, recognises students who exemplify the hallmark characteristics and traits of our motto, Service with Honour.
Chia En Qi, Christi
My journey at NJC has been defined by the ethos of ‘Service with Honour’, instilling in me a deep sense of duty towards others. From participating in class-initiated Values in Action (VIA) projects to taking on self-driven initiatives, NJC has nurtured my commitment to serving the community.
Volunteering not only allowed me to give back to the community but also facilitated meaningful connections and enriched my understanding of diverse perspectives. It sharpened my problem-solving and leadership skills, essential for both volunteering and daily life challenges.
Receiving the Lim Kim Woon Award is a profound honour, symbolising the embodiment of NJC's values. It reaffirms the importance of service and integrity in shaping individuals and communities. I am grateful for NJC's guidance and support, which have empowered me to make a positive impact and cultivate a future built on service and honour. I aim to continue with this legacy in the future.
Wong Sam Tou
Entering NJC for the first time, I thought that “Service with Honour” was just another cliché school motto. Little did I anticipate that six years later, this phrase would hold so much meaning, shaping the way I interact with others.
Whether it was the genuine support of fellow students before examinations or the unwavering dedication of teachers who extended their guidance beyond our academic pursuit, I learned firsthand how a simple act of kindness can illuminate someone's day and even alter the course of their life.
Inspired by these acts of kindness, I wanted to serve others beyond our school community. I am immensely grateful for the diverse volunteering opportunities at NJC, which broadened my perspective and instilled in me the belief that no change is too big or too small. It motivated me to make a difference in our society with whatever capacity I possess.
I am deeply honoured to be receiving the Lim Kim Woon Award, and I am very grateful to all those who have shown me what it truly means to Serve with Honour. I am certain that NJC will continue to nurture student leaders of the future, and I hope to inspire those around me to do the same as well.
Mohammed Abidur Rahman Khan
I am honoured to have received the Lim Kim Woon Award, and would like
to express my deepest sense of gratitude to the people in NJC who have
inspired and guided me throughout my journey.
As Mahatma Gandhi once said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose
yourself through the service of others." Through my various volunteering
experiences, from small acts of kindness to college-wide initiatives, I
have managed to discover and improve myself. However, the greatest reward
from volunteering is the sense of fulfilment from seeing the smiles on
people's faces and the interactions with people from different backgrounds
that remind me what it means to be human.
My experiences have taught me what it means to "serve with honour". It is a way of life that involves empowering people out of pure compassion. It is a long process of seeing your beneficiaries grow and develop till they can support themselves. Most importantly, I believe that "serving with honour" is something that is innate in us all. Cheering your friends up, greeting someone with a smile - we all have the power to bring positive changes into the lives of those around us.
The SAC Arts Excellence Award
The SAC Arts Excellence Award recognises academic excellence in the arts.
Ngiam Ju Rae
Contrary to popular belief, the life of a humanities student is far from easy. From navigating parental concerns about future job prospects to trawling through stacks of History notes, my journey as an arts student has been challenging but meaningful at the same time.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the diverse perspectives I’ve gained through the study of the humanities. Whether it be the macro understanding of global political and economic realities acquired from History and Economics lessons or the insights into the human condition gleaned from studying Literature, I am confident that the analytical lenses honed by the humanities will serve me well even as I embark on the next chapter of my studies.
Lastly, no reflection on my times as an arts student would be complete
without expressing heartfelt appreciation for my teachers. Their unwavering
dedication to their students and genuine passion for the subject have played
a pivotal role in making these past two years truly memorable.
I am immensely grateful for the experiences NJ has afforded me, and I would encourage everybody else to give the humanities a chance.
The SAC Science Excellence Award
The SAC Science Excellence Award recognises excellence in the sciences, both in core curricula and in co-curricular scientific endeavours.
Li Yichen
I am grateful for the various opportunities I have had to pursue my passion for STEM at NJC. From the SPIRE and ESTaR programme in Junior High 3 to the Science Research Programme in Senior High, I have collaborated with enthusiastic peers and mentors across different fields. These experiences have not only allowed me to explore science but also showed me the transformative power of science for the betterment of society.
Looking back, I have come to realise that science is not just about theories but also about making a tangible difference in people's lives. This belief fuels my aspirations. Inspired by the support and guidance of numerous seniors and teachers at NJC, who generously shared their insights and knowledge, I am motivated to pay it forward and help more younger aspiring scientists grow.
I would like to thank all the teachers from NJC’s research and science department, my research mentors, and trainers from the Olympiad national team. Their nurturing care has motivated a generation of budding scientists like me and empowered us to strive for a better future.
The SAC Sports Excellence Award
The SAC Sports Excellence Award is the pinnacle sports award, recognising sportsmanship and sporting excellence.
Ng Xin Yi
I am honoured to have been nominated and selected for the Sports Excellence Award. I am grateful for the opportunities provided by NJC to help me develop into a better student-athlete. The school has created a supportive and nurturing environment where I can learn from my mistakes and grow without fear. I appreciate the support and encouragement from my peers and teachers, without whom I would not have been able to achieve these accomplishments.
Above all, this award has reminded me that Softball is not just about individual accomplishments, but also about the strong bonds formed with my teammates. I have been fortunate to have seniors on the team who have supported me through tough times and helped me grow as a player. I hope to be a positive influence and role model for my juniors on the field, just as the seniors were to me. I believe that by doing so, I can ‘grow’ more juniors to become exceptional players and ‘cultivate’ the future of Softball in NJC.
Chen JiaXuan
My journey in NJC has been incredible and it ignited my dedication to the sport of basketball. Receiving this award is a profound honour, reflecting the passion and hard work I have put into my passion for basketball. For me, this award holds special significance - it represents the countless hours of practice, teamwork, and perseverance on the court. It is a reminder of the growth I have experienced personally and athletically throughout my time at NJC. In the context of this year's theme, "Growing People, Cultivating the Future," I see my journey in basketball as a microcosm of personal and collective development. By investing in myself and my teammates, we not only improve as individuals but also contribute to the growth of our team and community. This award motivates me to continue pushing myself athletically and to inspire others to pursue their passions with dedication and resilience. I am grateful for the opportunities NJC has provided me and excited to continue growing and contributing to our shared future, both on and off the basketball court.
The NJC@69ers Award
The NJC@69ers award, initiated and structured by the first cohort of NJCians, recognises excellence in the arts and humanities, both in core-curricula and co-curricular endeavours.
Nurin Haziqah Binte Helmy
NJC has played an integral role in giving me the confidence and support to pursue my passion for the arts and humanities. I have grown as a person through endless practices with my Malay Dance team, as well as the joyful and challenging moments experienced in class, alongside my dedicated teachers and peers.
My journey as an arts and humanities student has been invaluable, not because of the tangible outcomes, but because of the lessons learnt along the way. The development of critical thinking skills, and the exploration of the self and wider community, can be harnessed by all students to achieve a brighter future. While the merit of the arts and humanities might be overshadowed in today’s world, I think it is important for us to pursue what might be unconventional.
Meenakshi Ilango
Frankly speaking, I had not heard of this award prior to seeing the email congratulating me for it and when I searched online to read up on it, I realised that someone I have looked up to since I was in Junior High 2, Suneeti Sreekumar, also received this award a few years ago. In some ways, despite minimal actual contact with her, she cultivated my Junior College experience in the arts stream heavily - through her past essays and the stories other peers and teachers had to share about her. So, receiving this award comes as quite a validating signal of my personal growth in NJC. I am honoured to be a part of the growing list of recipients of this award and I hope to similarly contribute to my juniors’ development and their exciting futures.
The Stephen Loh Sports Excellence Award
The Stephen Loh Sports Excellence Award is the pinnacle sports award, recognising sportsmanship and sporting excellence in Track & Field, Squash and Canoeing.
Kayla Angelina Thesman
I am extremely grateful to have been awarded the Stephen Loh Sports Excellence Award, and I doubt that I could have made it this far without the support of my teachers, coaches and friends. Having been in NJ Canoeing & Dragon Boat for the past 6 years, it feels as if I have experienced it all, both the good and the bad. Through those tough times, my friends and teachers have always supported me, and my coaches have pushed me to test my limits, such that I can improve in the sport and learn important values along the way. Through competitions, intense training camps, and even team bonding sessions, I have learnt what it truly means to be a sportsperson, and it is not merely hard work and discipline. It is humility, leadership and gratitude. By appreciating all the little things that have helped us along our journey, our community ‘blooms’, and that is truly what sportsmanship is - to achieve greater heights together.
We are the future generation. By cultivating good habits despite ensuing challenges allow us to learn and grow infinitely, within the sporting arena.
Liew Jay Yee, Esther
I am very honoured to have received this award. Having been in NJ Track for the past 4 years has taught me many things. However, the biggest takeaway from this journey is to be resilient.
Being a sportsperson is definitely not smooth sailing. In every competition, we win and lose at times. Nonetheless, despite the outcome, the most important thing I learned is to persevere no matter how tough it gets. It was only through countless trials and tribulations was I then able to see myself learn and improve. This not only grew me as a person but also shaped me into becoming a better version of myself for my future.
The previous season was not easy with an ankle injury, but I did not let that hinder me. With the immense support from my teachers and fellow teammates, I continued to persevere till the end of my season and I am truly thankful for them.
The PAACT Aesthetics Excellence Award
The PAACT Aesthetics Excellence Award recognises excellence in the aesthetics.
Tan Zheng Rui
I am extremely honoured to receive the PAACT Aesthetics Excellence Award. Music possesses a transdisciplinary nature. Being a composer taught me how to incorporate what I have learned from other fields of knowledge into my process of creation.
While we always claim that we “play” an instrument or music, we often overlook the true essence of the word “play”. “Play” does not necessarily need to be fun, but rather it is the process and the experimentation which matters. For me, every exploration process reaffirms my conviction for creating a new composition. What mattered the most to me was how I pushed beyond my limits in every process to mould and create a piece personal to me, embedded with my own language. New music is an unchartered territory with boundless possibilities, for me to grow and learn. Receiving this award is an affirmation of my hard work and effort put into this craft, while I strive to bring contemporary music to a wider audience.
Cheng Wang Hoi Jacob Reuben
I am honoured to receive the PAACT Aesthetics Excellence Award. When I first joined the NJC String Orchestra, I was a novice in terms of ensemble playing. Playing in the NJCSO has given me valuable experience, allowing me to hone my skills. I also learned many valuable lessons in teamwork and discipline, for example through needing to practise every day in order to improve my craft. Being the concertmaster in the orchestra has not only given me a chance to strengthen my leadership skills, but has also given me an opportunity to help guide my fellow CCA and section mates in their playing. Receiving this award gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment, and further motivates me to strive to become a better musician.
Outstanding Leadership Award
The Outstanding Leadership Award recognises student leaders who have displayed leadership with sensitivity and service with honour.
Koh Wing Ling, Cassandra
Leadership has been a part of my life for as long as I can recall. My mother often reminds me of the time when I, as a kindergartener, announced my "claim to fame" as the next president. Naturally, as years have passed, my goals and understanding of leadership have matured, and I am profoundly grateful for the role that NJC has played in my growth.
Reflecting on what it means to be a great leader, I am reminded that leadership transcends grandiose titles. Great leaders embody vision, empathy, ambition, charisma, and above all, humility. These are attributes I have always admired from those around me, and earnestly strive to cultivate within myself. Leadership is also not a solitary pursuit; it is about forging meaningful connections with others, whether they are those we work alongside, or those we aim to serve.
Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to receive invaluable guidance from my teachers, and to be surrounded by exceptional student leaders, whose dedication and passion continually renew my resolve for service. As I continue to develop as an individual, I am sure my philosophy of leadership will continue to evolve and deepen. I am grateful to receive this award as a mark of my growth, and as a commitment to further serve my community.
Mak Zhan Rui Jovan
‘Service with Honour’. Our school motto is everywhere – from the end of
speeches to the walls of every lecture theatre. With a college that has
a motto centred around service, it is inevitable that the college places
great emphasis on growing their students into good leaders. As an awardee
of the Outstanding Leadership Award, I am indeed proud to be a product
of this wonderful school’s system.
At the end of my six years, these are my takeaways about leadership: the crux of leadership is working with others, inspiring a shared vision, and working towards a common goal. A good leader need not be perfect, neither does a good leader need to be better than the rest. All a good leader needs to have is the willingness to step into discomfort as well as the conviction to learn from past mistakes.
Some time in the near future, we might have robots that can solve mathematical problems far beyond the capabilities of mankind. Our academic knowledge might be rendered obsolete by then. However, I firmly believe that the leadership and people skills I have learnt from the various opportunities in NJC are as future-proof as it gets.
Lau Wan Sin
I am truly honoured to be able to receive this award from the school. I am beyond blessed to have had supportive teachers, friends and family in my 6 years in NJC. My journey in NJ has been a transformative one, marked by growth, learning, and invaluable experiences. I am immensely grateful for the nurturing environment provided by NJ, which has enabled me to cultivate my leadership skills and foster meaningful connections with my peers. NJ provided me with a safe space to make mistakes, learn from them and grow, allowing me to hone my soft skills and boost my confidence in taking up bigger responsibilities.
To me, leadership goes beyond holding a title; it involves walking alongside others, empowering them, and nurturing their potential. NJC has taught me the importance of supporting others in their journey of growth, just as I have been supported by my teachers and friends.
Whether through leading by example, lending a helping hand, or providing encouragement, I have learned that every act of kindness has the power to make a difference in someone's life. I am thankful for the countless opportunities to learn, lead, and contribute to the community and I hope to continue growing, learning, and serving others in my future endeavours.
Caitlyn Gan Shao Li
I am deeply honoured to have received this award. My journey as a student and a leader in NJC has been nothing short of fulfilling and challenging. Be it mentoring peers, leading initiatives, or fostering a stronger school culture, I have always strived to be the best leader possible for my team. There were good times when I received positive feedback from my team and successfully achieved our goals. However, I also made mistakes and faced obstacles along the way. Despite the ups and downs, I have no regrets when it comes to taking up these roles. I am grateful to NJC for providing such invaluable opportunities and to my fellow peers and teachers for their unwavering support and guidance. It is these experiences that have enabled me to grow as a person and come out stronger from it.
Ultimately, I believe that leadership is not just about leading a group to achieve their goals. More importantly, it is about going beyond one’s call of duty to inspire and support the growth of those under their leadership. Hence I deeply resonate with this year's theme as it aptly encapsulates what it means to be a leader. I look forward to further embodying this ethos within the wider community.
The Junior High All-Round Excellence Award
The Junior High All-Round Excellence Award is the pinnacle of all Junior High student awards, recognising all-round excellence in academia, CCA, leadership and service.
Kan Yuhui
This year's theme of Growing People, Cultivating the Future reflects my belief that education is not merely about imparting knowledge but about nurturing potential. It is about sowing seeds of curiosity, watering them with guidance and support, and witnessing them blossom into the people of tomorrow. I am glad that NJ has provided me with a plethora of opportunities, helping me discover my potential and shape me into the person I am today. From Research to Council, I gained not only practical skills that I still carry with me today, but it has also inculcated a sense of motivation and discipline to push through with anything I pursue. Being given the opportunity to serve the school community has also inspired me to go beyond to reach out to the greater community.
Receiving this award is not just an accolade. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. I believe that this is a celebration of the efforts of the teachers who have patiently taught and guided me along the way, inspiring me in the process, and the community that have supported me through my ups and downs. It is a recognition of the sacrifices made, the challenges overcome, and the triumphs achieved. But above all, it is a reaffirmation of the belief that with dedication and determination, anything is possible. Service with honour.
Emma Lee Wen Qi
Upon entering NJC, it was easy to over fixate on my academic performance as it seemed like the letters in my report book were all there was to school. It was only when I was first introduced to the notion of ‘Servant Leadership’ whilst in the Student Council that I learned to look outwards rather than inward - to give back to the people and the community as a servant leader. I found that I was often involving myself in initiatives that aspired to improve the livelihood of NJCians. My service towards the students eventually evolved into a desire to serve the community outside our NJC walls as well. Just as I have received guidance from many mentors who have inspired me during these various programmes, I hope to have touched the hearts and minds of just as many people.
The future of Singapore lies in the hands of people like you and me, where our society needs driven, compassionate, and progressive citizens to propel us forward. This award is one that empowers me to continue to put my best foot forward in every aspect, while uplifting those who work and serve alongside me.
The Elizabeth Poey Inspiration and Courage Award
The Elizabeth Poey Inspiration and Courage (EPIC) Award is designed to recognise and celebrate outstanding students, from all academic levels, who have shown the courage and vision to actively advocate for transformational change in Singapore society or in the world. This award is the first team award designed in National Junior College and is the first step towards stimulating a greater adventurous spirit and a “rugged society” mentality in a collaborative manner amongst NJC students.
Home@School
28 Students from National Junior College have partnered with First Toa
Payoh Primary School’s Home@School Programme to provide a safe and productive
place for students to learn and play after school. Since 2022, the programme
has strived to create a second home for the Primary 3 to Primary 6 students
who either lack a conducive environment to study at home, or will be at
home without adult supervision.
Our role in this programme is to be their buddies who tutor, play, and befriend them, as well as run activities such as Friendship Day colouring sessions, and sustainable planting. Alongside teachers and external coaches, we impart life skills onto the Home@School participants that prepare them for beyond Primary School, such as learning to cycle and skate, and to repair bicycles. Annually, we also organise a large-scale event for both students and parents to participate together, providing an opportunity for families to let loose and bond.
Through engaging in sessions thrice a week, and sustained effort of getting
to know the students on a personal level, we have forged meaningful friendships
with them and created an environment where we are treated as close friends
and confidants. For this reason, we hope to have achieved our goal in playing
a part in building their character, and creating meaningful memories for
the students at Home@School.

Growing our college community
Long Service Awards
30 Years
Benzie Dio
Having the opportunity to see so many different generations of students pass through NJC has been nothing short of amazing. Each batch is distinct from another, and how young people were like decades ago are nothing like who they are today. There is much to recognise in terms of the strengths today’s teenagers have, rather than wistfully think about what previous eras have focussed on. NJC is one of the most egalitarian communities I have had the pleasure to immerse myself in, for that I am grateful. Here’s hoping to see a couple of batches more, who knows what these youngsters are like ten years from now?

Yeo Chin Theng
I am someone who appreciates routine, so teaching at NJC has become a significant part of my life. As I navigate through various stages of life, different challenges arise, but with the support from the school and my colleagues, I am able to overcome them all.
The opportunity to experiment with new pedagogical approaches or teach Chemistry at different levels, such as H1, H2, and H3, as well as mentoring SPIRE projects, motivates me. Guiding stronger learners to stretch their abilities and helping weaker students improve, particularly when they develop an affinity for the subject, also inspires me. Additionally, I cherish the time and freedom given to collaborate with my students.
Encouraging students to be brave in their pursuit of knowledge, to inquire about how things work rather than solely focusing on performance, is important to me. I also strive to cultivate in them a sense of discipline, fostering a lifelong commitment to learning guided by strong moral values and a compassionate spirit of service towards others.

Serving in NJC for many years has been filled with numerous rewarding experiences and meaningful connections. It is always gratifying to witness the students mature into young ladies and gentlemen as they graduate from college. My motivation is fueled by the students' passion and enthusiasm, as well as the supportive environment among colleagues. It is always our students’ positive attitude and eagerness to learn that inspire me to keep teaching, and the support from friends has made this easier.
My aspirations for NJC students encompass their personal and academic growth, resilience in confronting challenges, enduring love for learning, and evolution as responsible and compassionate individuals who make positive contributions to society.
Ling Hwee Cheng
Experiencing the transition from a two-year JC to both a four-year and then six-year IP program has provided me with a wealth of unforgettable learning opportunities and experiences. Whether the experiences are positive or negative, these encounters have helped me navigate many uncertainties, adapt my teaching practices, and reaffirming my passion for teaching.
The shared visions and teaching passion among colleagues in the Math department, coupled with their mutual care and support, provided me with the resilience to foster growth and elevate both the department and the college. Similarly, students who embrace empathy and resilience continue to fuel my passion for teaching.
My hope for NJC students is having them to embody the qualities of compassionate and empathetic individuals. This includes recognising their own privileges and using them to uplift and empower those around them, thereby enhancing their own sense of fulfilment and purpose with grit but also contributing positively to their communities and society as a whole.

Years ago, I told former Principal Mrs Virginia Cheng that serving in
NJC is like working in a mini MOE. NJC is a place where educators are given
space to explore and try things out in order to improve themselves, and
as a team, we managed to overcome adversities in order to bring out the
best in our students.
The students I teach in the Mathematics classroom and Student Council have given me all forms of 喜怒哀乐 . Isn't this what life is about? The Mathematics department and Student Council teachers I work with: they are my pillars of support, my eating kakis.
To NJCians:
Continue to do things with meaning and purpose, and grow up to contribute
positively to society.

Life at NJC is very busy, with many opportunities for both students and staff. It seemed only not so long ago that my students and I spent a crazy amount of time at Sigma Lab working on their SPIRE projects in the evenings while they were boarding at 41 Hillcrest Road. With so many things to learn there is always something to try, to make learning better for students.
M V Rajakumari
Working at NJC for 15 years has been incredibly rewarding. It's been a fulfilling journey serving in the chemistry lab for so long. Throughout these years, NJC has fostered a positive environment where collaboration, respect, and support thrive, and I feel proud to be part of NJC's journey.
It's the sense of purpose that propels me forward. I feel a deep sense of satisfaction knowing that I'm playing a role in contributing to students' practical lessons. Additionally, the relationships forged along this journey serve as a constant source of motivation. The wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering support from HODs, AMs, TSOs, OSOs, and NJC colleagues have been instrumental in my journey.
I hope our NJC students discover their unique passions, talents, and strengths, and pursue their dreams with courage and determination. May our students graduate not only equipped with knowledge and skills but also with the confidence and compassion to make a positive impact on the world around them.

Firstly, I am truly honoured that the college has given me the opportunity to receive this award for my years of service. Words simply can not express just how grateful I am feeling right now.
As a physics lab staff, I enjoy the nature of my work and the relationships that I have formed with those around me. Every day is magical as long as you keep a positive mind and continue to take pride in the work that you have set out to do.
My sincere wish for the students in NJC is to be courageous in striving for your personal and academic goals. Also, do not forget to study hard and give it your best shot in everything that you do.
Neo Ko Hui
I’ve learned a number of things serving in NJC and am always thankful for experiencing various areas of teacher life. Watching the students develop and grow through the years, foraging friendships and developing resilience while navigating their teenage years and maturing into sensible young adults. My wish for past and present students is to lead purposeful lives, to give back to communities and to enrich the lives of those they encounter.
Ng Kian Tiong
I had hoped to enroll at NJC when I was 16, but unfortunately, I didn't get in. Therefore, being posted here for contract teaching and subsequently staying on as my first (and only) school after NIE training, is an experience I never imagined possible.
Over these 15 years, the school has given me so much - opportunities to learn, practice, reflect, develop, and even pursue my interests. This invaluable environment, along with my colleagues and the unique profiles of the students here, are precisely what motivates me.
In conclusion, I hope all students of NJC will realise their potential and the opportunities that have been given to them. As long as one continuously strives to become better, never gives up hope, and never stops taking concrete actions, nothing is insurmountable.
As author James N. Watkins said: “A river cuts through rock, not because
of its power, but because of its persistence.”
Senthamil Selvi d/o Jaganathan
Over the past 15 years, I've acquired extensive knowledge and cherished many fond memories working in the labs. I've also attended numerous courses to enhance my skills and work more efficiently.
My wish is for the students to always strive for excellence in their studies.
I am grateful for the recognition of the long service award.
Yew Shinn How Daniel
It has been a privilege and an honour to serve in NJC over the past 15 years, which seem to have flown by ever so quickly! The fast pace and high-performing culture in NJC mean that there is never a dull moment, while the congenial environment makes teaching in NJC a pleasant experience. I am grateful for the many opportunities offered by the College to develop myself both professionally and personally.
What has kept me going all these years are my desire to help students achieve their potential, my interest in the subject I teach, and the support of the leaders and colleagues in NJC. Additionally, the motivation to learn and the commitment to excel shown by students help to spur me on.
My hopes are that our students will have internalised the values of Civility,
Altruism, Resilience, and Enterprise when they graduate from NJC, and leave
the College with good memories as well as creditable academic credentials.
Zhang Jianli
Fifteen years ago, upon completing my teacher training at NIE, I joined NJC and was instantly charmed by the school’s lively students, supportive colleagues, and picturesque campus. It was clear to me that NJC would be my career’s final destination.
Over the past fifteen years, my journey in teaching has seen some challenges. There were also moments when I felt very tired and considered a break. Yet, whenever I saw the light in my students' eyes because they were inspired, a new source of energy was rekindled in my heart, making me strong once more.
May the students of NJC always have light in their eyes and hope in their hearts as they forge ahead to live up to their potential.
10 Years
Er Yinghui Junice
As cliché as it sounds, it is truly in a blink of an eye that 10 years
have gone by! What I love about teaching is that there are no two days
that are the same. I learn new ways of doing things every single day and
am constantly humbled by those around me. I am most grateful to all colleagues
who have stood by me, pressed on together with me, and provided me support
through every single step of this journey. I am also thankful to all students
who have kept the course interesting as I hone my craft. There is still
a long way to go and much to learn in this teaching career, and I will
continue to take inspiration from those who had gone before me. Service
with honour!
Hue Hoe Ping
Spending 10 years with the same organisation may seem like a long time, but I value the stability of being in an environment that supports growth. Remaining here allows me to witness the changes in the educational landscape and the different facets of the people around me who have supported my professional development.
Teaching can sometimes feel transactional and burdened with emotional and physical tolls. However, I recognise the profound impact that a good teacher can have, and I strive to provide my students with a positive learning experience.
In an age of ostentation, I believe it's important to embrace humility. The quote "have more than you show, speak less than you know" resonates with me, and similarly, I hope our students can inspire others not with the volume of their words, but rather with the depth of the values they uphold.
Oh Wei Ting
Serving in NJC for so many years has been a profound blessing, fostering growth amidst a supportive environment with nurturing colleagues. It's a place where seeds for personal and professional development continuously flourish, fueling my passion to serve. The enduring motivation comes from the enduring connection with the students, who eternally reside as kids in my heart, alongside the camaraderie within the close-knit department and the encouragement from colleagues and school leaders. Embracing an "ok-to-fail" culture empowers me to persistently strive for excellence and evolve in my practices. My deepest hopes for our NJC students are for them to blossom into unique individuals, filled with passion for life and their pursuits, and to wholeheartedly serve their communities with enthusiasm and compassion.
Yap Teck Sheng Terence
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in NJC. Teaching on the SH side has allowed me to work with many students who are young adults, and I hope I have influenced them positively and instilled the right values. Working with VIA under SDT has enabled me to explore student development beyond the classroom and collaborate with students across all levels.
One thing that keeps me motivated is the students. Many are driven in the right direction to excel, not just for themselves but also for others. Each year brings new challenges, and despite the toughness of Canoeing, the dedication of the students never fails to inspire me. I am also thankful for the wonderful colleagues who help solve problems when issues arise.
I fervently hope that my students will continue to embody the school motto in all aspects of their lives. Moreover, I hope they continue to be motivated by a desire to create a better society for all.
