Strategic Thrusts
NJC is launching its new Strategic Plan for 2026-2030. The five strategic thrusts shown below are a work in progress. We are excited about these new strategic directions and share with you our current thoughts. We look forward to further refining the thrusts with input from the College community past and present.
Thrust 1: Good citizens living the REACH values in family, community and society
NJCians strive to develop and demonstrate the College values of Resilience, Enterprise, Altruism, Civility and Hope (REACH) wherever they are. They put as much effort into growing social-emotional competencies as they do their cognitive skills. In highly competitive environments both within and beyond the classroom, they choose to encourage others rather than focus on themselves. They are hardy individuals who recover from setbacks, do not dwell on the past but choose to prepare themselves and others for the future. Altruism – other-centredness – is the NJC distinctive that all NJCians choose – making it their purpose to enrich other’s lives through understanding and service.
Thrust 2: Creative scholars demonstrating the 7 Elements of Inquiry
NJCians are responsible stewards of their intellectual abilities. They are active and curious learners. They are excited about learning new concepts and skills by questioning and investigating issues and phenomena, and they constantly make connections across contexts and domains. They are energised by challenges and work collaboratively to solve problems and iterate solutions. They remain humble in intellectual pursuit, knowing that there is always more to understand about the world around them. They are eager to learn from people who have different experiences and skills to their own and they are always willing to share knowledge and skills with others.
Thrust 3: Courageous leaders demonstrating self-leadership, team-leadership and thought-leadership
NJCians seek to live wisely and invest effort in developing healthy habits. They honour the strengths of others and contribute to every group they belong to. They exercise discernment in the face of the values and worldviews current around them and have the courage to take a stand for what is right even if it is not popular.
Thrust 4: Civil and courageous communicators in and beyond the classroom
NJCians are clear, confident and respectful in their spoken and written communications, in both the real and virtual worlds. They are active and patient listeners who seek to understand before responding. They ask thoughtful questions to clarify and establish mutual understanding to gain new insights and perspectives on issues. They set the tone in every conversation with courtesy, humour and good sense.
Thrust 5: Good neighbours rooted in Asia, embodying the REACH values to the world
NJCians strive for a balanced understanding of global issues and act as agents of positive change, whether at an individual, community, national, regional or global level. They have a particular interest in our neighbourhood of Southeast Asia and the wider Asian context – they appreciate the resilience and enterprise in people, cultures and economies and stay up to date on contemporary developments. They seek to build mutual cross-cultural understanding across the region for collective progress.
